DNC hosts regular Kathak exams at the studio for students above the age of 9 to take grades in dance, assessed by an external examiner of the ISTD (International society for teachers of dance).
DNC is proud to be affiliated with ISTD, since 2009. Over the last decade, we have seen numerous students go through the grades, from Primary level, upto Grade 6. Many of which have used the qualification towards UCAS points to get into their chosen University.
Kathak students study both theory & practical elements of the dance form, which we teach in classes. They are also required to do their own practice at home, alongside research and self-study. The older the student the more is expected from them. We recommend 12-24 months to prepare for each grade.
There are 4 parts to the exam:
– Dance (the dance piece you learn in class will be assessed)
– Theory (you will be asked to verbally answer questions about your piece, the history of the dance form etc)
– Recitation (being able to recite on your hands, all the rhythm compositions you learn)
– Creative exercise (being able to devise your own dance steps using a phrase given by the examiner)
Exams are done in small groups and are always held at the DNC studio. Internationally recognised certificates are issued by the exam board within 8 weeks of the exam. External students learning from other teachers are also welcome to apply.
The next exam date is: Sunday 13th December 2020. Following this it will be in March 2021.
